A fuel tanker has leaked a large amount of petrol after rolling over in Tyabb yesterday (July 11).

CFA was called to the incident on the corner of Frankston Flinders Road and Westernport Highway just after 3pm and found the tanker holding 39,000 litres of unleaded petrol on its side.

Firefighters are using foam to prevent sparks from the highly flammable fuel. CFA has requested the council bring in soil to stop the fuel flowing into a creek nearby.

Westernport Highway and Frankston Flinders Road have been closed in the area and trains have  been stopped between Hastings and Somerville.

CFA also requested Tyabb airport suspend operations.

The driver of the truck has escaped unharmed.

An Advice message has been issued warning people there’s an incident involving hazardous materials in the area.

There are 12 CFA trucks on scene and two brigade vehicles. Crews are expected to remain on scene for several hours.
