Gas main ruptured in Springvale
A large gas main has been ruptured by a backhoe at the building site for the new Springvale train station and around 40 people have been evacuated from the surrounding area.
*UPDATE - An All Clear message was issued for this incident at 12:18pm (Wed 4 June).
Crews from Noble Park, Dandenong and Springvale brigades are attending the incident on Lightwood Road (near Warwick Avenue), seven vehicles including the Dandenong Hazmat Detection Unit and Hallam Heavy Hazmat, and it’s likely they will remain on scene for at least another hour.
Crews are monitoring the air and have switched off the power in many nearby buildings as a precautionary measure against the highly flammable gas. Victoria Police IS assisting with the evacuation and traffic control.
The gas company is working to repair the gas main and will reinstate power after the scene has been made safe.
An Advice message was issued at 11:04am (Wed 4 June) advising people to shelter in place and close windows and doors and turn off heating and cooling vents - and not to evacuate unless specifically requested to do so by CFA or Police.
There is no risk to the community at this stage.
