Get set for the Urban Championships
Brigades from across Victoria and beyond will converge on Mildura this weekend for the 133rd Senior State Urban Fire Brigade Championships.
The event runs from Saturday, 12 March to Monday, 14 March. Around 3500 CFA members and their families are expected to attend, with 61 teams and 1000 competitors vying for top honours. Four teams are travelling all the way from West Australia to take part.
Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley, CFA CEO Lucinda Nolan and Chief Officer Joe Buffone are all attending.
The Chief Officer said events such as this displayed the dedication and enthusiasm of CFA members.
“It’s a chance for brigades from all over Victoria to come together to build team spirit, develop individual and team skills and promote camaraderie among brigades, volunteers and their families,” he said.
“Not only do the championships increase and maintain a level of physical fitness for competitors, but they help to improve the skills and handling of firefighting equipment.”
Fire appliances straight off the assembly line will be on display, allowing members a close up view of the latest firefighting technology. CFA specialists and some of those who built the vehicles will also be on hand to answer questions.
A number of other services will also be on offer, including free and confidential health checks. The Healthwatch team will assess members’ risk of cardiovascular disease and check height, weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol (HDL, LDL & TC) and triglycerides.
The West Australian teams come from Bassendean in Perth’s North West, as well as the South West coast towns of Bunbury, Harvey and Mandurah.
Mildura Fire Brigade won the right to host the championships and have hosted state championships 10 times in the past, most recently in 2010.
The 133rd Senior State Urban Fire Brigade Championships will be held at the Mildura Showgrounds on Eleventh Street (VicRoads Map 535 Ref Q7).
Entries remain open for the Senior and Junior Rural Championships, at Colac on the 2nd and 3rd of April. More details are available on the VFBV website.
