Victoria’s fire services are lapping up the success of this year’s Good Friday Appeal relay, raising a record $27,115 for the cause.
More than 120 people from across Melbourne and regional Victoria gathered for the 14-hour event yesterday, Thursday 28 March, running laps of about 800 metres around the CBD in teams.
The relay, run by the fire services in conjunction with Uncle Bob’s Club, is now in its 4th year.
Last year the event raised more than $22,000 and participants ran 351 laps, or just over 350km. That’s the equivalent of running from the CBD to Albury-Wodonga border.
The emphasis of the event is fundraising, with all fitness levels invited to participate.
“The relay is a great way to engage with the community of Melbourne and to raise money for a great cause,” relay co-ordinator and MFB Leading Firefighter Steve Axup said.
CFA volunteer and relay coordinator Christine Henderson said much like CFA, the Good Friday Appeal relies on the generosity and goodwill of thousands of volunteers.
“Fundraising for the Good Friday Appeal has become a huge tradition for both fire services. The relay is one of many ways that CFA and MFB support the Good Friday Appeal each year.”
Fundraising was also undertaken by CFA and MFB firefighters and personnel, shaking donation tins in the city (and across the state for the wider appeal).
At the end of the relay, the money raised was presented during the Channel 7 telethon as part of the Uncle Bob’s Club contribution to the Good Friday Appeal.
