Governor General at Main Ridge
In glorious sunshine, His Excellency Governor Sir Peter Cosgrove Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia officially opened the new Main Ridge Fire Station.
It has been two and a half years since the brigade were informed that they had been selected as part of the State Government funded Rural Fire Station Replacement program and the day provided a fitting conclusion to the many hours of planning and hard work put in by all those involved.
Unfortunately the site where the old station stood was not feasible for the new Type 1C station so the brigade underwent lengthy consultation with the local Council, clubs and community groups to utilise a plot of land at the Main Ridge recreation reserve. The site of the new station will service the community efficiently for the next 50 years.
Under the CFA guidelines, brigades are allocated a parking bay for every government funded truck and one extra in a “regulation” station. Main Ridge brigade have 2 other vehicles and so it was determined that they required a three bay station.
With this in mind the brigade set about raising the funds required to extend the engine bay. With letters sent to all the residents and clubs in Main Ridge along with several sausage sizzles the brigade, to date, have raised almost $100,000.
Captain Ian Troutbeck in thanking the members and local community said “Thanks to the generosity of the local community, we raised the funds to add on the additional bay at full size allowing for any size vehicle we may obtain in the future.
To all the residents, a very sincere thank you for your financial support. Not only have we had the support of these generous individuals, we have been humbled by the widespread support we have received from local clubs and enterprises”.
When it came time to plan the station opening and with the community’s generosity in mind the Brigade decided to invite Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove to officially open the new fire station and to their surprise he accepted the invitation.
Over 200 people attended the event including brigade members, benefactors, supporters and members of the local community. The event was a fitting celebration not just for the members of the Main Ridge Fire Brigade but for the community of Main Ridge as a whole.
