Grants for volunteer brigades

CFA will share in a $35 million Victorian Government investment in volunteers, which will help brigades purchase new equipment while also delivering new trucks and Personal Protective Clothing.

At Wattle Glen Fire Station, Emergency Services Minister James Merlino launched the Emergency Services Volunteer Sustainability Grants Program, which sees $15 million in grants available to all emergency services volunteers in 2016-17.

The grants can be used for new trailers, hoses, rescue and safety equipment, generators and other operational equipment, building upgrades and maintenance, training and development, and a range of other needs, which would assist brigades to improve services to the community.

In addition, Mr Merlino announced $20 million for CFA brigades, including funding for 28 trucks, work wear and Personal Protective Clothing for volunteers.

CFA Board Chair Greg Smith said today’s announcement would help brigades to be more sustainable and deliver programs that would support a growing and diverse volunteer base.

“This investment will not only ensure members have the right tools and equipment to carry out vital work in protecting lives and property, but are resourced to build and support a resilient volunteer base.”

Wattle Glen Fire Brigade Captain Stephen Gaunt said planning for future appliances and equipment which would help make the community safer was at the top of his mind.

“The brigade is working towards the final stage of planning of a major station expansion, which will make it safer and a more comfortable environment for volunteers to work,” he said.

“Looking ahead, we have identified a need for an Ultra-Light Tanker. With all the narrow, windy roads and narrow driveways around Wattle Glen, it will certainly help us respond more efficiently.

“This program is certainly an avenue we can explore in getting the funding we need for our brigade.”
