Monday 4 August 2014 marks 100 years since Great Britain declared war on the German empire and its allies. This brought Australia into the Great War which claimed more than 16 million people.

Men from communities across Victoria volunteered to join the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) for overseas service. Some of them pulled double duty as a volunteer – they were also members of their local Bush Fire Brigade long before the formation of today’s CFA.

CFA is calling for stories of Victorian volunteer firefighters’ World War 1 service. We know that some brigades have memorial plaques in their fire stations and, of course, wartime stories, diaries, photos, medals and other keepsakes are handed down through the generations.
