October is Health and Safety Month. This is important to us at CFA as we want all members to return home safe at the end of the day, whether it be after a CFA activity or after any other work our members perform.

Safety is about everyone looking after themselves as well as looking after others who might be affected by our actions or inactions. We always encourage you to speak up if you see or hear something that doesn’t feel right. CFA work can be dangerous if not performed correctly.

To promote Health and Safety Month, WorkSafe has organised events at 24 locations around the state including Mildura, Shepparton, Bendigo, Echuca, Swan Hill, Ballarat and Geelong; so there is sure to be an event somewhere near you. If you cannot make an event, think about joining the live broadcast of the Melbourne event on 26 October. It is a great line-up of speakers and has a strong focus on mental health and wellbeing and it looks to be very informative.

You can register online at and all events are free.

We will be talking safety all month, and encourage you to do the same.

Staff locations have Health and Safety Representatives and volunteer locations have Brigade Health and Safety Coordinators. Do you know who your local Health and Safety person is? Do you understand their role? Why not talk to them about it and learn a little more?

It is a great time to conduct an inspection of your fire station or work area. Checklists can be found via the Health and Safety page linked below.

Get Moving! The CFA Get Moving competition commences on the 3rd of October, and even if you don’t have a team in it is a great opportunity to remind yourself of the benefits of moderate exercise and healthy eating. Don’t sit still – Get Moving!

Check out the CFA Health and Safety page and see what you can find for you to help promote the safety message this month:

We are looking forward to your involvement in Health and Safety Month 2016!
