CFA firefighters from 14 brigades have been working tirelessly since 3pm today (26 April) to contain a fire in 120-year-old homestead in Yarram.
Flames and smoke were visible from the Yarram Fire Station and local police assisted with locating the property.
District 10 Operations Officer David Ellams said firefighters had managed well under particularly challenging circumstances.
"The fire started in the middle of the home, so firefighters needed to use Traralgon's ladder platform to get inside through the roof," Mr Ellams said.
"Crews in breathing apparatus had to cut through a steel roof and the original roof of the historic building to attack the fire internally.
"They did a great job containing the fire to the middle of the home, protecting other historic farm building surrounding the home.
"Water access on the property was also difficult, so trucks were going into the town centre to collect water before calling for assistance from a Wellington Shire water tanker to attend the scene."
No one is believed to have been inside the home. The fire is now under control, however firefighters will remain on scene for some time into this evening.
