A message from myself and Chief Officer Euan Ferguson

Today, Monday 4 May, is International Firefighters’ Day. We give thanks to all our firefighters for their commitment, exceptional courage and selfless service in protecting our community and environment.

International Firefighters’ Day is also occasion to pay tribute to firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Yesterday, hundreds of people gathered at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Ballarat for CFA’s Annual Memorial Service to honour and commemorate the lives of our fallen firefighters. The service is traditionally held on the Sunday closest to International Firefighters’ Day and is a time to pause and reflect, remembering each of the 67 brave firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice for their community.

The memorial service is an opportunity to pay our respects to the families and friends of our fallen firefighters and acknowledge that their legacy lives on in CFA. I would ask that we all take a moment to reflect on the work of our firefighters, remembering those who are no longer with us and celebrating the strength that comes from being a part of the CFA family.

The work of a CFA member can involve long hours and can be arduous, and physically and emotionally demanding. Many tasks we do carry inherent risks. Every once in a while, a firefighter may be asked to do something extraordinary – to think quickly and courageously, act decisively and provide help at great personal risk.

Being a CFA member often means being away at important times – birthdays, anniversaries, celebrations and get togethers with friends and loved ones. But that is a mark of the dedication of our members who willingly forego family events to protect our communities.

To all who provide services to the community, thank you for your dedication, selflessness and commitment. It is appreciated by all Victorians.
