Horsham firey educates local kids

Horsham volunteer Bernie Hadfield not only loves his role as a CFA firey but he’s also passionate about educating local kids about fire safety.

Bernie has been a CFA volunteer for more than twenty years and throughout that time he has undertaken many operational and non-operational roles within his Brigade - one of his fondest being kids fire safety education.

Bernie has been known to jump into his PPC, lace up his boots and jump onto the fire truck visiting local schools teaching kids about fire safety.

“We take the kids through the Fire Safe Kids program and teach them some basic fire education,” said Bernie.

“We talk to them about the importance of smoke alarms, how to call Triple Zero and once all the serious stuff is over, we let them come and see the fire truck.”

“Many of the kids have seen a fire truck on the road before so this gives them the opportunity to see them up close, learn about how they operate and ask questions.”

Fire Safe Kids is CFA’s flagship education program for primary and pre-primary students. It’s delivered by volunteer or career firefighters who visit your school with an engaging and interactive presentation.

“Fire safety education is such an important subject in primary years," said Bernie.

"Not only does it embed and reinforce important fire safety messages that can be drawn on throughout the children’s lives, many kids take what they learn back to their families to create awareness within their own homes.

“Once we’ve finished up for the day the kids get a certificate to take home and show their parents.

“This is just one part I love about being a CFA volunteer, but really I love everything,” said Bernie.

“We’ve got a great crew and it’s a great opportunity to build new friendships.”
