There were a few of us that decided to stay back and have a coffee after the last turnout

It's not an uncommon thing to do

We like to quietly check on each other's welfare

Particularly after a nasty job but just as often after a false alarm it's just what we do

Everyone's invited but never actually asked to stay back it's up to the individual

We all find it a good thing to be able to talk to someone who has had similar experiences

In any case during the course of this gathering we started to discuss ways to improve our general fitness (Physical & Mental) having decided we are all crazy for doing what we do we contemplated how we could improve our fitness

It had on previous occasions been suggested we get some Gym Equipment to improve our physical fitness and by encouraging people to use it they would be in the company of people who understood  what we do give them an opportunity to have a chat

The bonus of having the equipment at the station could mean increased security, a better response time and healthier fire fighters

Then the often asked question at volunteer stations arose "How do we fund  it"

It was suggested we look at on CFA Connect as someone had seen something in "The Fireman" newspaper that might do the trick

Sure enough there was an article about the Fire Awareness Awards with a link to the website

I was given the task of finding out more about this opportunity

At first it seemed like it was more trouble than it was worth with the need to register and write a proposal

But after a phone call to  discuss what was the best way to go things became a lot easier

As it was explained to me by Sheona it doesn't need to be Rocket Science just something that will make us better prepared in the future

The Fire Awareness Awards are an opportunity to acknowledge people's efforts over the last 2 years, as well as giving people the opportunity to further develop incomplete projects.
Apparently there are the awards for completed projects in 15 categories as well as the grants for new projects

We plan to put in a grant request I suggest that you or your brigade do as well

For more information please call Sheona on 9262 8969 she was very helpful

Entries for all Awards close at 4pm on 2nd October 2012
