Katandra West house fire
On 1 June, just before 3am, crews were called to a fully-involved house fire.
Story by Senior Station Officer Leigh Allan
Crews from Katandra, Toolamba, Shepparton, Numurkah and Drumanure attended the property on a local dairy farm.
The three-bedroom renovated home had just been vacated.
BA crews from Shepparton and Numurkah began to extinguish the perimeter of the fire while Katandra protected exposures nearby.
With a shortage of water, Toolamba and Drumanure rotated to supply water to the Shepparton pumper.
Power was isolated to the property but this also caused problems because it shut down the dairy. Powercor was able to restore power so the owner could continue to milk his 200 cows that morning.
It took half an hour to control the fire, with crews taking precautions for any potential asbestos in the old building.
It was great to see volunteer and career firefighters working together as a team to extinguish the fire. It was the Katandra incident controller's first house fire and he did a great job.
The fire has been deemed suspicious and police are investigating the cause.
