Mornington Fire Brigade recently attended the annual Kids Day in the Park event where up to 2000 pre-school children attend a free event for all the pre schools in the local MorningtonPeninsula area.

“This year we wanted to try something a bit different and give something back to the community”  Station Officer Gary Bryant said. “ While we still had the Fire Trucks to draw the kids in we then had two tables set up under a marquee where a team of staff and volunteers put together laminated place mats” Gary added.

Leading Firefighter Andrew Smith was tasked to get the concept off the ground and with support from the Brigade the idea was put together. “The place mats were individually named and included safety messages and a picture of the Heavy Pumper” Andrew said. “Now when each child sits down for a meal at home, they will be constantly reminded of our safety messages”. He said

While each adult was waiting for the place mats to be laminated they were spoken to by a CFA member and handed a house fire brochure and colouring sheet.

“ The idea was such a great success after four hours we had to literally turn people away and pack up”. Gary added

This will now be a regular part of our community safety kit to get our important safety messages across to the community he said.
