Knox burns bright for torchlight
The streets of Ferntree Gully have sparkled with the flickering flames of 300 kerosene torches during the biennial CFA Knox torchlight parade on Saturday evening, March 2 2013.
As part of the Knox Festival, hundreds of local residents lined the streets to cheer on 18 CFA brigades from around Victoria as they weaved their way to a moving ceremony at Ferntree Gully Football Ground.
The power of 3 pipe bands, from Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria and Ringwood RSL, had the crowd covered in goosebumps as they played Amazing Grace, before a brilliant fireworks display.
Event co-organiser, Ferntree Gully volunteer firefighter Graham Crichton said the event cemented the connection between CFA and the community.
“It’s a tremendous experience to see people who rely on CFA connect with the members. It wonderfully demonstrated the link between CFA and the community and gave us an opportunity to show CFA as a firefighting force in Knox and more widely,” Mr Crichton said.
Fire Services Commissioner Craig Lapsley, Chief Officer Euan Ferguson and joined volunteers on the 2 kilometre march from the Ferntree Gully fire stationto the football ground.Knox Mayor Karin
Orpen was also a special attendee.
Mr Crichton said the evening was a particularly special tradition for CFA members.
“The appreciation of the public makes us feel pretty proud, no doubt about that. It’s uplifting to be cheered on by the community you protect and to know they hold CFA in such high regard.”
The century old tradition was also the perfect opportunity to honour CFA stalwart and mentor Bill Watson with an Outstanding Service Medal, presented by the Chief Officer.
Special congratulations are due to the event’s organisers who ensured the night wentoff virtually without a hitch. Team leader Grahame Daniel (FTG), Graham Crichton (FTG), Cate Evendon (Bayswater) and Tony Jenner (Upper Ferntree Gully).
The next parade will be held in 2015.
