CFA’s Lilydale Fire Brigade Captain Warren Davis was surprised when a new family car was given to him by Channel Nine’s The Today Show this morning.
Reporter Stevie Jacobs presented Warren – a CFA volunteer of 40 years – with the latest Skoda station wagon, while he was on his way to breakfast with fellow brigade members.
“I’m in shock, actually,” Warren said, as he tucked into his eggs and bacon after all the excitement.
“It’s come at a pretty good time though, because our family car has a broken seat belt so this new one will allow us to go out together again.”
Chirnside Park resident and friend Geoff Hams nominated Warren, as part of the show’s Great Car Giveaway.
“I heard they were looking for worthy and deserving people – everyday heroes – and Warren fits that description perfectly in my book,” Geoff said.
“With 40 years of service at CFA where he has fought many fires and saved many lives, Geoff really is a great Australian who's so well loved by many people in our community.”
Warren is working with his mate Geoff on a charity project building units for single parents and their children in Lilydale, which will be named after Geoff’s late mother.
“He does so many things behind the scenes people wouldn’t even know about. He’s never been one to make a song and dance about it. He just gets on with it because he can see the community benefit,” Geoff said.
Warren joined CFA in 1976, firstly based at Mooroolbark for 12 years, before moving to Lilydale where he has been ever since.
He has attended a range of incidents including Ash Wednesday, Black Saturday “and everything in between.
“It’s all about getting together with our fellow firefighters in someone’s time of need, to make their life that little bit easier on what’s usually one of their worst days,” Warren said.
