Longwood Fire Brigade's Thank You Day in March last year was awarded the Shire of Strathbogie Community Event of the Year on Australia Day 2016.

Longwood Fire Brigade hosted a Thank You Day in March 2015 in grateful recognition of the 100 brigades and other emergency services that fought the difficult Longwood East/Creightons Creek fire in December 2014.

At the instigation of Longwood brigade Captain Shaun Hearmon, with help from Creightons Creek brigade Captain John Chiswell, Gooram brigade Captain Pat McCormick, Ruffy brigade Captain John Furlanetto and BASO Paul Verbeek, all brigades and emergency services involved were invited with almost 450 people attending.

The importance of this event did not go unnoticed, as Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley, the Minister for Emergency Services Jane Garrett and the then Chief Officer of CFA Euan Ferguson visited. All expressed just how valued an occasion such as this was to everyone who was involved. Local businesses, also recognising just how grateful the community was, donated much of the food and drink.

It was also an opportunity for those affected by the fire to relax and hopefully recover from the trauma of a serious fire.

To quote Euan Ferguson, who said on the day, 'The CFA is born of the community. The organisation is nothing without volunteers.

I take great pride in seeing how we work so it is fitting that we come together and unite. Whatever role you played in the Creighton Creek fire, I thank you for being there."

And an affected resident said that he could not begin to thank the community for their efforts and was thankful to all involved in organising the Thank You Day.

The support received for the event was outstanding.
