CFA and MFB challenged each other to a day of cricket last Sunday (30 October), giving past and present firefighters the opportunity to show off their cricketing prowess in two 20/20 cricket matches at Victoria Park, Kew.

Despite severe weather warnings being issued for Sunday, the wind and rain held out and there was great turnout from both agencies and their families.

CFA Firefighter Emmett Bronca coordinated CFA’s involvement in the inaugural event, and said it was great to see so many CFA members come together from across the state to take part in the day.

“We’d like to thank each and every player who participated in Sunday’s game,” Emmett said.

“Both the games were played in good spirits, and we all hope this can become an annual event for the two agencies.”

The master’s 20/20 match kicked off at 11am, with MFB winning the toss and electing to bat. After scoring a respectable 6/119, MFB were chased down by CFA, with Warrnambool’s Murray Sutton scoring 46 runs and leading the team to a six-wicket victory.

Best on field was awarded to Murray and MFB’s Brett Bailey.

The showdown between current firefighters began at 2pm, with CFA batting first and scoring 9/91 off their 20 overs, before bowling MFB out for 82. Best on field went to MFB’s Brock Ferguson and CFA’s Noel Heafield, who top scored with 31 runs.

The cricket day was held as part of MFB’s 125th Anniversary year celebrations and also marked the end of Fire Action Week, Victoria’s annual fire planning and preparation week.

MFB CEO Jim Higgins presented the trophies to CFA’s winning teams, and Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley also cheered on each of the agencies.
