Victorians will start to see more smoke from planned burns carried out by the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) and Parks Victoria to reduce bushfire risk to people, property and communities.

Victoria’s weather provides limited opportunities for planned burning, so burns are carried out whenever the weather and conditions are right. The best opportunities tend to be in autumn when conditions are most stable.

Other work to reduce fuel loads such as slashing, mowing and clearing to create and maintain fuel breaks will also be carried out.

As plans can change with little notice due to changes in weather and conditions, the best way to find out where and when planned burning is happening is to visit www.dse.vic.gov.au/burns or call the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667.
