Construction works are well underway for the new Southern Metropolitan Region Headquarters and multi-agency Emergency Management Complex, marking the beginning of the much anticipated, $3.5m project.
In an exciting new era for the Region, CFA has leased two floors of the new four storey building which will be constructed in the Estate One Business Park at 81-125 Princes Highway, Dandenong South. This address is the iconic site of the former General Motors Holden vehicle assembly plant.
CFA Regional Director Peter Schmidt said the establishment of the Region Headquarters and Emergency Management Complex will amalgamate multiple offices and emergency management facilities into one building, ensuring efficient and adequate amenities into the future.
“Establishing a new site and securing a lease has been a long process so it’s great to see this project coming to fruition,” he said.
“I have no doubt this new building will ensure the best level of service for this ever growing and densely populated region. This includes service in the areas of both administrative and support as well as multiple tiers in the emergency management structure”.
The building is expected to be complete by mid-2014 and will be up and running well before the 2014/15 fire season.
Mr Schmidt said this project would not have been possible without the strong partnership between CFA, the developer Cbus Property and the City of Greater Dandenong.
In another exciting announcement for the Region, the Dandenong Fire Brigade will also move to a new and improved site at 186-194 Princes Highway, Dandenong. Construction on the new $13m integrated station will also begin soon which is expected to be completed mid-2014.
The two level station will be the largest of its kind in CFA featuring six truck parking bays, amenities for up to 16 career firefighters at any one time, large meeting and training areas, a gymnasium, administration offices, large outdoor car park and practical training areas. This new station will also provide a better base for the brigade’s volunteers.
“Dandenong Fire Brigade is the busiest CFA station in the state. With firefighters attending more than 2,100 call-outs per year, it’s important to have adequate facilities. This new station will enhance the brigade’s ability to protect and serve the local and broader community now and into the future,” Mr Schmidt said.
The existing co-located Southern Metropolitan Headquarters and Dandenong Fire Station site at 120 Princes Highway will be sold once the move into both new premises is complete.
