Neighbour wakes residents to lounge room fire

A neighbour banging on their front door alerted residents of a fire in their lounge room in Dandenong on King George Pde just after midnight last night (14 December).

The occupants had managed to extinguish the fire with buckets of water by the time CFA crews from Dandenong and Springvale arrived.

Incident Controller Darren Padgett said the quick-thinking neighbour had saved these residents’ lives.

“The fire had spread along a blanket to the carpet to the couch and they hadn’t changed the batteries in their smoke alarm so it was only brought to their attention when the neighbour smelt smoke and saw fire through a window,” Mr Padgett said.

“If she hadn’t woken them up, the situation may have been a lot worse.”

Three CFA crews helped the residents remove smouldering furniture from the home, which was damaged by smoke throughout the property.

The fire is believed to have started from a cigarette in a plastic dish, which had not been completely extinguished.

“It’s a reminder to check the batteries in your smoke alarm, while also ensuring you dispose of cigarettes safely,” Mr Padgett said.
