In October 2011, the National Emergency Medal was added to the Australian Honours. It recognises service to others during nationally significant emergencies.
The 2009 Victorian Bushfires have been declared a nationally significant emergency and members of CFA who rendered service during the specified dates of these fires are eligible for the National Emergency Medal.
The National Emergency Medal may be awarded to CFA members who rendered sustained service during specified dates in response to the nationally significant emergency. The medal may also be awarded to those members who rendered significant service in response to these fires, including those that do not satisfy the criteria for sustained service or the minimum duration.
Following the declaration of the Vic Fires 09 campaign as a Nationally Significant Event under the auspice of the National Emergency Medal, CFA was requested to submit nominations for 30 members for the 2012 Australia Day Honours. Two members were approved and received the Award at a ceremony in Canberra on Australia Day 2012. Subsequent to this, the remaining 28 members were also approved for the Award and 26 were presented the National Emergency Medal at a ceremony held in Whittlesea in September, 2012.
In February 2012, a call for National Emergency Medal (Vic Fires 09), nominations was made to all brigades and districts to provide details and evidence to support members being considered for this prestigious award. Following an extensive consolidation process, the first schedule containing 4,760 CFA nominations was submitted to the Australian Honours and Awards Secretariat (AH&AS) in November 2012. Subsequent nominations were submitted for consideration after the initial schedule.
As a result, CFA has received to date 6,820 award sets for approved CFA recipients throughout 2013 to 2017. A total of approx. 6,100 award sets were presented to CFA members at one of 52 presentations between 2013 to 2016. The remaining award sets will continue to be presented at local functions.
Following the en masse National Emergency Medal presentations, CDs with the ceremony photos were sent out to each Secretary who had members awarded. The CD includes photos of each recipient awarded, along with the Brigade group photos.
Additional copies were made and are available to recipients, who were awarded at the ceremony.
Note, there are only limited copies (first-in, first-served).
