In January 2016 a beautiful animation Illustrated Guide to Defending your Home during a Bushfire was released online by the ABC. Designed by Melbourne-based animator and illustrator Lucy Fahey, the animation explains the resources and preparations needed to actively defend a home during a bushfire.

The clip was viewed and shared extensively via social media by CFA brigades and following this success, CFA decided to work with Lucy to develop three more animations. The animations are conversational, are based around CFA’s publication Your Guide to Survival and are to be shared by brigades through social media and shown at community safety and brigade events.

Lucy is an award-winning illustrator and animator whose work is part of the permanent collection at the State Library of Victoria. She was also a finalist in the UN Media Awards and the Voiceless Media Prize in 2014. To develop a unique story Lucy uses a combination of pencil drawings, water colours and online tools.

The first animation launched today is Am I at Risk? which looks at the different environments at risk from fire – dense bushland, grassland, coastal scrub and paddocks – and encourages viewers to understand the risks associated with those environments and how to respond in the event of a fire.

Fire Danger Ratings gives viewers an understanding of weather districts, what the FDRs mean and encourages them to monitor FDRs daily.

Decision Making helps viewers understand the many decisions that need to be made before a fire starts including the need for a backup plan.

The animations will be released individually over the coming weeks and will be available through CFA’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.
