CFA firefighters were paged to a structure fire on Princes Highway in Officer at 4.20am yesterday, 12 October.

Nine units from Pakenham, Narre Warren, Officer, Beaconsfield and Bayswater fire brigades responded to the scene involving a childcare centre.

FRV personnel from Oakleigh, Pakenham and Rowville brigades also responded to the scene in support of CFA crews.

Incident Controller and Officer Captain Rob McCandless said the structure was fully involved when crews arrived.

“The fire had travelled inside the roof of the building and the flames grew to around 20 metres tall,” he said.

“I worked with CFA and FRV Commanders and the FRV Senior Station Officer on scene to develop a fire attack plan.

“Everyone did a fantastic job to save around half of the room space inside the building and we contained it to the single structure, so neighbouring buildings were not impacted.”

The scene was deemed safe just before 5.50am and crews remained on scene for several hours into the morning to conduct blacking out operations and mop up.

“The work on scene by both CFA and FRV crews was commendable, which made everything run smoothly,” Cpt McCandless said.

The scene was handed to Victoria Police to lead a fire investigation.
