Work has already begun in preparation for the independent inquiry into this season’s Hazelwood mine fire.

With that in mind, firstly I acknowledge the work of many CFA members from across the state who responded to the call, and diligently and professionally worked on both the frontline and in community information and support roles. I’m sure I’m not alone when I say thank you to all involved for everything you have done.

Moving forward however, I recognise that this inquiry may be unsettling for some who have been involved in other inquiries, especially the 2009 Bushfires Royal Commission. I’d like to take this opportunity to stress that this is a different process; one that we anticipate should not involve anywhere near the same extent of witness statements or hearings.

After the inquiry announcement by the Government in March, work began promptly with the establishment of the Inquiry Board. Community consultations are currently underway with hearings to follow in the coming months. The final report will be submitted to the Governor-in-Council by 31 August 2014.

Broad Terms of Reference for the inquiry have also been established. They are to examine the circumstances of the Hazelwood mine fire; the emergency response to the fire; and the response and support provided to Morwell and other affected communities.

CFA is ready to support this inquiry, and in order to facilitate this, a small team including Karen Alexander our civil Legal Counsel and Peter Schmidt Regional Director Southern Metropolitan Region will together lead CFA’s response.
Thank you in advance to those members who have been asked to prepare documentation and logs in readiness, your support is appreciated, and we will continue to provide updates wherever possible.
