CFA and Coast Guard personnel demonstrated proficiency of their recently gained skills by being assessed in different scenarios at the West Sale Campus in Gippsland on the weekend.

Under the watchful eyes of Shaun Reilly and John Alexander (structural instructors), the basic building blocks of firefighting were demonstrated and reinforced to show proficiency when responding to remote isolated structures.

The time and effort spent towards gaining the underpinning knowledge and skills required to respond to isolated structures were acknowledged on the weekend at the West Sale Campus Training Ground. Members from Lakes Entrance, Kalimna West and Coast Guard Lakes Entrance, found the experience invaluable.

While being put through their paces, the new responders showed their understanding of how to maintain safety on the fire ground for themselves and their team.

The scenarios generated good communication and conversation, the underpinning knowledge of working within your own ability, asking if you are unsure and communicating if you were not comfortable in preforming a task assisted the team’s decision making process allowing the team to function accordingly to the risk.

The structural instructors experience and knowledge allowed the flexible delivery of information to constantly reinforce points throughout the day, this was not lost on the new responders and their confidence grew.

"Our brigade’s capacity has grown with the new responder’s knowledge, skills and ability to work well in a team," said Lakes Entrance Lieutenant Peter White.

With the holiday season upon us, on behalf of my brigade I would like to wish all a very happy Christmas and a safe New Year. Travel Safely!
