With the arrival of autumn and the winding down of the fire danger period, planned burns are occurring across the state.
Smoke may be visible in certain parts of the state as the burns are conducted.
You can check when and where planned burns are occurring via the VicEmergency App as well as at https://www.ffm.vic.gov.au/
CFA and Forest Fire Management Victoria regularly conduct fuel reduction planned burns on private and council land, when conditions allow, because it is one of the most effective methods available to reduce bushfire risk.
Individuals wishing to conduct planned burns on their property MUST register their burn-off with the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA) by calling 1800 668 511 or emailing burnoffs@esta.vic.gov.au
Whether registering a burn-off by phone or email, people should be prepared to give some basic information including location, date, expected start and finish times, estimated size, and what they intended to burn.
Individuals must follow some basic rules, register your burn-offs first and foremost, check weather conditions, including monitoring the wind, and follow local council laws and regulations.
People with asthma or other conditions that make them susceptible to the effects of smoke are advised to consider staying indoors, reducing their exercise, taking their medications and following their asthma plan. Those experiencing symptoms should seek medical advice or contact Nurse-On-Call on 1300 606 024.
All Victorians are advised to be alert and cautious.
Keep your burn off safe and legal:
• Check fire restrictions in your area and always register your burn
• Check and monitor weather conditions - particularly wind
• Warn your neighbours beforehand that there will be smoke in the air.
• Stay in attendance the whole time your burn is going
• Have sufficient equipment and water to stop the fire spreading.
