Saving lives is all in a day’s work for many CFA members, but until 31 July they won’t need to jump on to the back of a truck to make a difference.

All they have to do is roll up their sleeves for the 2013 Emergency Services Blood Challenge and donate.

Eight HQ staff kicked off CFA’s contribution at a group donation at the Red Cross Mt Waverley donation centre on Thursday (13 June).

CFA volunteer and Fire Equipment Maintenance Manager John Lloyd said it was a great excuse for new donors to take the blood challenge plunge.

“Winter generally sees low donation rates as this is cold and flu season, but the need for blood and blood products doesn't diminish,” John said.

“Donating blood is another great way show what fantastic community-minded people CFA members are.”

Blood Service spokesman Shaun Inguanzo said giving blood takes just an hour of your time.

“Every donation helps to save three lives. With one in three Australians needing blood in their lifetime, there’s every chance that the lives saved could one day be yours or that of a close friend or family member,” he said.

“Yet only one in 30 Australians give blood, and with demand set to double in the next decade, we need to ensure that Australia has enough blood donors going forward.”

CFA is aiming to knock Ambulance Victoria off the Blood Challenge throne after it snared the winners title last year.

Members of the community are also encouraged to participate by calling 13 14 95 or visiting to make an appointment between now and 31 July.
