Scrub fire nears retirement homes
At 6:30pm on Wed 6 Feb Springvale brigade headed out to a fire in woodlands at the rear of a sports field in Dingley Village.
As they approached a column of smoke was clearly visible behind where people were using the playing field. Senior Station Officer Darren Padgett called for additional tankers as the fire took hold.
The major concern was the series of retirement homes along the southern perimeter of the fire that might have been impacted by embers and smoke. MFB crews joined with CFA to quickly knock the fire down and begin the arduous task of blacking out.
Fortunately a good supply of water was available to Springvale pumper who relayed water to other tankers.
Police and fire investigators have deemed the fire suspicious.
