Shed fire near Ballarat

A car has been destroyed by fire inside a shed in an industrial area in Delacombe this morning, despite quick action from an employee.

The man was working on a car hoisted up in the 20 by 30-metre shed on Laidlaw Drive when it caught fire. He used a fire extinguisher to start putting out the blaze but needed assistance from firefighters to complete the job.

Seven trucks from Ballarat City, Haddon, Sebastopol and Wendouree attended, with around 25 firefighters working to get the fire under control.

Senior Station Officer Scott Gambino said the man assisted firefighters to get the incident under control in less than half an hour.

“He certainly had made a difference by using the extinguisher but it ran out before the fire was totally extinguished,” Mr Gambino said.

“Firefighters were then able to step in and save as much of the shed as possible. There is minor structure damage and the car was destroyed, but crews contained the fire to inside the shed, protecting surrounding buildings.”

Thick black smoke has also damaged the shed.
