CFA firefighters have worked through the night on a fire at Koorlong where a large pile of almond husks remain burning.
Firefighters were called to the almond stack fire on a Koorlong property, around 20km south-west of Mildura around 6.40pm on Thursday, 8 December.
The fire is not yet under control.
CFA District 18 Operations Officer Rob McNally said the almond stack would burn for a number of days and was issuing a significant amount of smoke.
“The fire is extremely difficult to extinguish due to almond husks being very dense material,” he said.
“Around 12 personnel and six trucks worked all night and firefighters have a lot of work in front of them today.
“Throughout the morning there will be two bulk water tankers, two front end loaders, two excavators and a grader working to pull every small pile apart, wet it down and ensure it is properly extinguished before transferring it to a separate area.
“This work is likely to take a few days.”
The total size is around 100 metres by 20 metres.
Rob said there was smoke in the air which was impacting Mildura and the Irymple area. An Advice message has been issued.
“There’s significant smoke and it will remain in the air for some days.”
