Dandenong Fire Brigade recently sponsored and ran the first Australian Smoke Symposium last Wednesday and Thursday at Dandenong and SETG in Bangholme.

The symposium comprised of 2 days, one day of theory at Reading Cinemas in Dandenong and a half day practical at SETG.  We had 93 attendees learn about the dangers of smoke especially the effects of hydrogen cyanide and carbon monoxide.

Several external agencies were represented including Victoria Police (Arson and Forensics), Aviation Fire and Rescue, Ambulance Victoria, Worksafe and Metropolitan Fire Brigade. The CFA was represented by career and volunteer fire-fighters from across the state as well as instructors, training ground supervisors, PAD operators, HQ staff and representatives from VFBV.

The Fire Smoke coalition in the USA was contacted by Senior Station Officer Rick Owen after his Emergency Service Foundation study tour in September last year. After 6 months of bookings, planning and cajoling three world class instructors were sponsored by the brigade to deliver the program. The event was judged a great success from the feedback received from the participants.
