Smouldering chook poo near Foster

CFA crews had the smelly task of spreading out two smouldering piles of chicken manure on a farm in Stony Creek this afternoon (24 January).

Six trucks from Dumbalk, Koonwarra, Meeniyan and Nerrena used an excavator and firefighters’ hard yakka to spread out the two 10-metre squared piles of manure, which had fermented and heated up.

District 9 Rostered Duty Officer Bill Alards said it was an unusual incident for crews.

“We do get the odd call-out for piles of mulch heating up and requiring help to spread out but this one was the first I’ve heard of its kind,” Mr Alards said.

“There’s one truck still on the scene and the property owner will keep an eye on it now, with a water cart and excavator remaining on scene.”
