State Champs back for 2014
The Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria State Championship events will be held between February and April, with the Urban Junior Champs kicking off at Swan Hill Showgrounds on February 22 and 23.
The Junior Champs are for junior urban brigade members aged from 11 to 17. There are two age groups for events - under 14’s and under 17’s. More than 75 teams are expected to compete in firefighting skills based events with over 600 people expected to attend.
The event gives junior members the opportunity to develop their operational skills, experience the competitive environment and meet other junior fire brigade members from around the state.
Labour Day long weekend (March 8 – 10) will bring together members from across the state as part of the Urban Senior Championships in Bendigo.
The Senior Championships are for urban brigade members 17 years and older. More than 70 teams are expected to compete in firefighting skills based events.
A special element of the Urban championships is the discipline section, whereby members are judged on their uniform, appearance and marching skills, as well as the special torchlight parade through the town on the Saturday evening of the event. A special sight, each member carries a historic kerosene lamp throughout the parade and is again judged on their marching.
The final event will be the combined Rural Junior and Senior Championships, held in Geelong on April 4 - 5, where more than 40 teams are expected to compete in firefighting skills events, different to those offered in the Urban Championships.
‘CFA on display’ will be a highlight at each of the events, showcasing new projects, offering free health checks and providing recruitment information, activities and fire safety messages. These displays include:
- Member classification
- Brigade sustainability
- Home Bushfire advice service
- Member Engagement
- The Captain Koala Show
The impressive Mobile Education Units and various CFA vehicles will also be on display at the events.
