Sunbury home gutted by fire
Fire destroyed a garage and large section of a home in Sunbury on Protea Ct this afternoon (16 September), while one male was initially unaccounted for.
CFA crews arrived about 2.40pm to find the house fully alight, and their first priority was ensuring no one was inside. Another male was treated by paramedics at the scene.
District 14 Rostered Duty Officer Paul Elso said firefighters in breathing apparatus performed three thorough searches of the single-storey house before the missing male was found away from the property.
“Firefighters performed exhaustive searches of the property to be completely certain the place was unoccupied,” Mr Elso said.
“Once the male had been located, firefighters’ focus turned to an aggressive fire fight to save as much of the home as they could.
“Unfortunately, the garage is completely gutted and there’s a lot of damage to the rest of the home.”
A crowd formed around the property to watch emergency services get the fire under control. Police made sure people were far enough back to remain safe and out of the way of crews.
“If you’re looking on at any sort of emergency incident, please make sure you always listen to any official instructions and stay well back for your own safety, and to ensure emergency personnel are not obstructed from the job at hand,” Mr Elso said.
Fire investigators and police are yet to determine the cause.
Local council representatives and gas and electrical specialists also attended.
