Tracy plates up safety tips
Award-winning chef Michael Ryan (The Provenance) has backed this year's home fire safety campaign, getting together with Beechworth brigade member Tracy McVea to advocate for safer habits in the kitchen.
The Beechworth-based chef, last year’s Age Good Food Guide chef of the year, cooked a meal with local firefighters and spoke to reporters from WIN News.
Beechworth Urban Fire Brigade member Tracy McVea said that chefs and firefighters had one thing in common – they understood the value of paying attention in the kitchen.
“It’s great to see a prominent figure like Michael getting behind the campaign,” she said.
“As most of us would know, especially parents, putting some cooking on and getting distracted is an easy thing to do.
“We’re just asking people to think twice before leaving cooking on the stove unattended.
“There are a lot of other simple things you can do around the house to keep yourself safe, and you can find a handy checklist online at our website cfa.vic.gov.au.”
A new study has found that 96 per cent of mums who do the cooking also multitask and do other things. More than three quarters take care of the laundry, 72 per cent by phone calls and 59 per cent by a computer in another room.
And alarmingly, most of the mums surveyed had experienced smoke and flames in the kitchen at some time.
In June this year, regional house fires accounted for almost $5 million in damages state-wide. Of those, 36% of regional house fires started in the kitchen, up 6% on last year.
Wood-fuelled heating has also been a major cause of fires this winter in the Indigo Shire and neighbouring municipalities, responsible for 25 per cent of fires in CFA’s Districts 23 and 24.
