Truganina Fire Brigade, in conjunction with Hoppers Crossing Fire Brigade, recently conducted a Hazard Reduction Burn in the hamlet of Chartwell, just north of the Truganina township.

Chartwell is home to a number of residents, nestled in large grassed and pastoral areas. It was this reason that the brigade, in consultation with Wyndham City Council and District 14, proposed a hazard reduction burn, giving a buffer zone around the residents and their properties, in case a fire did sweep through the area.

With the assistance of a couple of crews from Hoppers Crossing, the methodical task of lighting small strips at a time started. Constant monitoring of the weather meant crews could safely “light-up” certain areas, while leaving others untouched until the winds proved favourable again.

Within a couple of hours, all plotted areas were burnt out, with blacking out and overhauling taking place to make sure that important utilities were safe (wooden telecommunication and power poles), and that no burning areas were left to spring up and take off into unburnt grasslands.
