More than 500 Victorian firefighters and 55 fire trucks are on the ground in New South Wales today to assist local fire agencies facing extreme fire danger across central New South Wales including the Blue Mountains and Sydney area.

Fire Services Commissioner Craig Lapsley said Victorian resources in NSW were significantly increased over the past couple of days in light of todays predicted fire conditions.

“Victorian fire services are able to provide this level of support as Victoria is experiencing low bushfire risk across the State,” he said.

“MFB are operating in metropolitan Sydney from 10 FireRescue NSW fire stations. These MFB firefighters will work alongside local firefighters providing response to emergency calls in the greater Sydney area including City of Sydney, Bondi, The Rocks and Neutral Bay.

“CFA has 45 fire trucks operating in the Blue Mountains and these trucks and crews will work with NSW fire crews and other interstate fire services to protect the communities under threat.

“Department of Environment and Primary Industries and Parks Victoria have deployed remote area forest firefighters to fight fires in the national parks and forested areas.

“Victorian Incident Management Teams continue to work with NSW Incident Controllers providing expertise and support to manage these large and complex fires.

“To assist with aviation firefighting all of the Victoria’s firefighting aircraft have been made available to NSW.”

Mr Lapsley said Victorian personnel and trucks will remain in place until Friday.

“Today is going to be a difficult day for all those working on the fires in NSW and our thoughts are with everyone involved in this effort,” he said.

“I have no doubt our firefighters will do a great job working with NSW firefighters in what are expected to be difficult and challenging conditions.”

Victoria’s total deployment to NSW since last Friday is almost 650 personnel.
