We remember - 2009 fires fifth anniversary
We are approaching the fifth anniversary of the 2009 Victorian bushfires. This will be a difficult time for many of our people who were personally affected and for those who lost loved ones.
The anniversary again comes at a time when many of our members are out battling long-running fires, which have already claimed 33 homes and one life.
Where possible let's use this time to remember and honour the 173 people who lost their lives in our state's most significant natural disaster. Let's reflect on the courage and strength shown by communities, including CFA members, families and brigades, who lost so much in the fires and yet continue to provide professionalism, dedication, courage and selfless bravery.
The Victorian Government is organising a central remembrance event for Sunday 9 February at the Treetops function area, Melbourne Museum commencing at 2pm. The event is open to the public but has been arranged predominantly for affected individuals, families and friends.
Local events are also being held across the state, and we encourage you to get in touch with your district office for more details.
People affected by bushfire can access a range of community services as well as bushfire-specific services supplied by the Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund (Tel. 1800 180 213).
Look after yourself and each other and don't hesitate to take advantage of the free welfare services offered by CFA which include:
- Peer support which can be accessed through the Rostered Duty Officer, Officer in Charge, Line Manager or the Peer Coordinator
- Chaplains can be contacted directly or by calling Converge International on 1800 337 068
- Psychologists/Counsellors can be contacted through the Member Assistance Program on 1300 795 711.
For those too busy out on the fireground, try to put aside some time to reflect when you can.
