West Gippy Summer Exercise
To prepare for the coming summer months and fire season, the West Gippsland Group took part in an exercise on Sunday 27 October. The Exercise centred around three strike teams rotating through three different sectors, providing different training scenarios.
Preparation was coordinated by the Groups IMT personnel who worked from the Local Command Facility (LCF) in Drouin. Here they delegated the members from brigades in the Group onto Tankers with crews mixed from the brigades and people sometimes on unfamiliar vehicles.
The Tanker crews were put into strike teams of 2-3 Tankers led by a Forward Command vehicle (FCV) with a Strike Team leader.
The Strike Teams rotated through the three Sectors of the Incident being:
Sawmill Sector – Where Strike Teams were required to set up a closed circuit pumping relay for asset protection of critical infrastructure in a small community.
Picnic Point Sector – Where Strike Teams were shown and had an opportunity to use a Slip On unit and an Ultra Light unit which are becoming more utilised on Strike Teams and Bush fires.
Fishers Rd Sector – Where Strike teams were shown oven Hallora Tanker 1, one of the prototype crew cab tankers that will make part of one of District 9s pre planned Strike Teams.
During the course of the day the Strike Teams were put through the Staging Area where they were fed by the members of the Longwarry & District Catering members. The day proved to be a success with everyone taking some valuable experiences home with them.
