Applications close tomorrow (Friday 29 April) for the Young Members Forum, an exciting event open to CFA members under the age of 30.

The Young Members’ Forum will take place on Saturday 21 May, with member aged bewtween 18-30 encouraged to register.

The forum is a first-time event that will see CFA invite young members from other emergency management agencies to come together to discuss the future of volunteerism, culture and recruitment in the emergency services.

CFA CEO Lucinda Nolan said she was delighted to use the occasion of National Youth Week to announce the event, in conjunction with Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria (VFBV).

“This is about harnessing the ideas and energy of the young people amongst our ranks and taking a fresh look at what volunteering will mean to the next generation.

“We can’t afford to sit back and be complacent. It’s absolutely essential that we adapt and change in order to stay relevant and attractive to young people.

“This event will bring like-minded people together and we see this as the catalyst for a network that is self-sufficient and ongoing."

Lucinda added that the Young Members’ Forum was the first step in a long-term strategy that would see CFA and VFBV working hand in hand with young members to create ongoing platforms, channels and networks.

“We want to make sure that the good ideas that come out of the forum are progressed in a way that ensures words are translated into action,” she said.

VFBV CEO Andrew Ford said a dedicated VFBV Youth Network Panel was being established in each CFA District as well as a State Youth Advisory Committee.

“This will provide an ongoing and structured network to engage young volunteers into VFBV and CFA deliberations,” he said.

“We want to give young people the ability to engage and make a difference within their organisation by introducing them to the VFBV Youth Network.

“Often young people can see something that isn’t working well or have an innovative idea, but lack the support networks or channels to bring about meaningful change. The VFBV Youth Network will provide those opportunities.”

The Young Members’ Forum will be held on Saturday 21 May at the Victoria University Convention Centre, followed by a social event and accommodation at Melbourne Discovery.

There will be a general call for all members under 30 – including those not able to attend – to submit suggested discussion topics to help shape and guide the forum.

Sherri McKerley (CFA Learning and Volunteerism) said youth were heavily affected by the economic, social and environmental challenges facing the world today.

“They also have great potential to be partners in designing effective responses to these challenges.” she said.

“We must engage youth in our endeavours to ensure volunteerism remains sustainable into the future.”
