Between 25 November and 10 December CFA joined with other emergency services to raise awareness about the UN’s commitment to end gender based violence through the 16 days of Activism. 

Active bystander training tackles gender inequality

On the last day of the 16 Days of Activism, which is Human Rights Day, active bystander training was delivered by Women’s Health East to a group of CFA staff and volunteers. 

This half-day session is designed to equip people with the skills and confidence to identify and respond to instances of gender inequality and behaviour that both disrespects women and condones violence against women. 

The active bystander tools can be used to challenge any form of discrimination, harassment or bullying. These tools are designed to reinforce healthy, respectful behaviours and focus on what people in the workplace and communities can do to make a difference.

The feedback received from those attending was overwhelmingly positive. Attendees indicated they felt more confident to call out inappropriate behaviour thanks to having a raised awareness of what they can do in different situations if they feel comfortable and safe. 

This sparked a great discussion during the session which included comments such as, “If I think it’s not OK, it’s probably not OK and someone else also thinks so” and “Everyone has a role to play”.

The Inclusion and Fairness team is currently in discussions with Women’s Heath Victoria to offer the active bystander training next year to CFA staff and volunteers in all regions.
