“Alone we can do so little; together, we can do so much.” It sounds obvious, but making sure everyone’s voice is heard is vital when it comes to bushfire safety.

The community engagement workshops give participants a chance to discuss how a community-centred approach to engagement can work in a practical sense.

And the latest round of free Community Engagement training, provided as part of the Safer Together program, really empowers CFA staff and volunteers to adopt this inclusive approach.

A survey conducted in 2017 revealed the need for more training opportunities in community engagement for our people. Safer Together last year delivered training to more than 300 CFA people as part of the Building Capability in Community Engagement training. 

We want to offer everyone the chance to participate in this training, so we’re back with more sessions in locations right across the state.

Why should you get involved?

We want our people to have the best relationship they can with the communities they protect. In understanding and communicating with our communities, we’ll be able to involve them in key decisions when planning for bushfires. This results in improved preparation for, and responses to, bushfires.

The sessions are highly practical and interactive. You’ll meet both staff and volunteers from other agencies and expand your network of emergency services personnel. There are sessions to suit every level of experience.

There are currently three levels of Community Engagement training available to both staff and volunteers:

Level One - Basic Community Engagement – Engaging through Practice (one day workshop)

A one day session that provides a foundation  of skills in community engagement. I recommend this session if you’re just getting started with community engagement.

Level Two - Community Development – Engaging through Relationships (one day workshop)

This training is for members who actively work with communities to support and develop their capability, capacity and resilience.

Level Three - Creative Facilitation – Engaging through Facilitation (two day workshop)

Two-day workshop suited to experienced facilitators and engagement specialists looking to enhance their existing facilitation and engagement skills.

We know how helpful this training can be, so we’ve done our best to spread it right across the state. From Horsham to Bairnsdale, Geelong to Mildura, and everywhere in between – there will be a session for you.

Sessions are taking place now, and run until mid-June. Places are limited and filling fast, so get in quick! Training is free and open to CFA staff and volunteers, as well as members from other emergency service organisations.
