CFA was called to reports of smoke issuing from the ceiling of a house on Mannings Road at 6.02am. Two CFA units from Daylesford and Hepburn attended.
Hepburn Fire Brigade Captain Barry Yanner said the working smoke alarm inside the home woke up the two people inside, allowing them to safely self-evacuate and call Triple Zero (000).
“If it wasn’t for the smoke alarm alerting the occupants, the damage to the home would’ve been far worse,” he said.
The fire was located inside the ceiling and wall space of the structure and extinguished by firefighters.
“The impacted area was around 8m x 8m and appears to have started near the flue of the wood heater,” Cpt Yanner said.
The incident was under control at 6.49am and a stop was issued at 7.36am.
Crews remained on scene for another hour to ventilate smoke from the house and ensure there are no further hot spots.
Cpt Yanner said this fire is a reminder to all Victorians to regularly service and maintain their electrical appliances, including heaters, and ensure working smoke detectors are installed.
