John joined the Belmont brigade in February 1946 and served as captain, lieutenant, secretary, brigade chair and a firefighter.

- National Medal in 1986
- First Bar in 2011
- Outstanding Service Badge in 2007
- VFBV Gold Star

Belmont Fire Brigade First Lieutenant Adrian Flynn said John’s significant contribution to the brigade will be missed.
“John will leave a lasting legacy at the brigade, with the brigade tanker and the brigade Member of the Year award, being named in his honour," Adrian said.
“He was well respected by everyone at Belmont and other brigades, and his presence and contribution to the brigade will be truly missed by all who knew and served with John.
“I can honestly say John was known by everyone as a true gentlemen.”
A private funeral and burial service was held for John on 17 June.
Firefighters paid tribute to him by forming a socially-distanced guard of honour.
“The brigade will look to hold a memorial service with the family after COVID restrictions have been eased.”
