Firefighters rescued a man to safety after his vehicle fell around 10 metres down onto a cliff edge in Mount Martha yesterday, 24 August.

CFA crews from Mount Martha brigade, Dromana rescue unit and District 8 HQ attended the scene, with support from FRV Pumper 94 and the high angle rescue crews.

After being notified at around 5.45pm, firefighters located the car in scrub land with the rear of the vehicle right on the edge of the cliff.

Incident Controller and Mount Martha Captain Travis Hutchins said the Dromana rescue crews stabilised the vehicle using chains and trees to prevent it from falling off the cliff.

“We carefully removed the door of the vehicle to assist the driver in safely exiting the vehicle,” he said.

“Once the driver was out of the vehicle, FRV crews conducted a high-angle rope rescue to help the man off the cliff to safety and hand him into the care of paramedics.”

The scene was declared under control at around 6.40pm and safe at around 7pm.

Crews notified heavy haulage to retrieve the vehicle from the cliffside.

“Our local CFA crews and FRV firefighters worked really well together on scene,” he said.

“Working together efficiently to bring the driver to safety was a really good result.”
