Local CFA brigades across the Wellington council area are showing off their new wheels after receiving replacement Field Command Vehicles (FCV) last week.
Thanks to a government contribution through the Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program (VESEP), Stratford Fire Brigade and the Stradbroke Group of brigades were handed the keys to two of the new vehicles, both priced at more than $75,000.
The standard build Ford Ranger FCVs will replace the 10-year-old models the brigade and Group previously used.
Stratford Captain Mark Jones said the vehicle is instrumental when responding to incidents as a Strike Team.
“It is really a purpose-built resource for our fire response,” he said.
“The new vehicle has more capacity to carry gear such as whiteboards, benches, fridge, work bench and communication tools like radios and phones to be used on the fireground.
“The brigade is excited to have this ready to use ahead of fire season; it will only boost our service to the community.”
Stradbroke Group Secretary and Golden Beach Captain Paula Grosveld was pleased to receive the keys to the vehicle last week and said it will be a versatile response resource across the group.
“We have tough terrain across our brigade’s response area including coastal areas, forests and rural landscapes; the FCV can access spaces larger vehicles otherwise wouldn’t,” she said.
The Stradbroke Group resource will be stationed at the Stradbroke Fire Station but will be used across the Group’s response area, including Longford, Golden Beach, Loch Sport, Stradbroke, Sea Spray, Giffard West and Willung brigades.
“It’s a fantastic upgrade for not only our Group but for the community, especially as we approach fire season,” Paula said.
“In my experience leading a Strike Team to NSW and the East Gippsland fires in 2019-20, the FCV was an invaluable resource on the frontline.
“Our brigades can’t wait to try out the new vehicle.”
