The Beaufort Brigade has hit the streets to deliver the Property Advice Visit Service (PAVS) to their community.
This service offers residents the unique opportunity to gain the insight of their risk and receive advice from a CFA member at their own home.
Beaufort Fire Brigade, which is extremely proactive in community engagement, took the opportunity on CFA Sunday to introduce members of their community to PAVS. Residents will receive a one-on-one visit or street talk to discuss their local fire risk, planning and things they can do around their property to better plan and prepare for high risk days.
Three members of the brigade have taken up the challenge to contact community members identified as living in the highest area of fire risk within their Brigade area. By undertaking this program and engaging their community the brigade has the opportunity to gain a better understanding of their residents and what they may have to deal with in the event of fire.
Captain Colin Gerrard of Beaufort Brigade says “This has been a great opportunity for our members to get out there and engage with residents in our Brigade area. There are a few areas that are at risk if a fire went through here, so it was good to get to talk to the residents face-to-face and let them know the best ways to stay safe this summer.”
Colin added: “The locals have the opportunity to meet brigade members and receive advice on the best way to prepare their property on a one to one basis at home and get some good ideas on the best way to protect themselves and their properties in the lead up to summer.” This would include making a fire plan that best suits their individual needs and circumstances.
CFA’s PAVS Team Leader, Andrew Thomas, encourages other brigades to get involved. “CFA understands that it is difficult for members to meet the various demands that go with volunteering, but getting out there and meeting the public can reap rewards to the community and the brigade.
The more informed local residents are, the more likely they are to make good decisions. It’s an opportunity to get important messages out to your community and help them plan for high risk days”.
Members interested in engaging with their local residents through the Property Advice Visit Service or other community safety programs should discuss this with their captain and put their name forward. Members will be provided with an information session and support from Region and Headquarters.
