Bunnings, CFA partner to reduce house fires

Head down to your local Bunnings store this weekend (6-7 April) to learn more about smoke alarms and the importance of home fire safety.

Bunnings,

CFA is once again partnering with Bunnings to help communities learn more about smoke alarms during this significant time of year.

In addition to in-store displays and information in every Bunnings store in Victoria, CFA firefighters will be available at select Bunnings stores (see below) to answer any questions residents may have.

There will also be children’s activities and workshops.

The events are designed to coincide with the end of daylight saving when people are asked to check their smoke alarms when they change their clocks.

Firefighters are concerned some households may be equipped with smoke alarms that aren’t in working order, putting the occupants at risk in the event of a fire, particularly as we head into the cooler time of year.

Smoke alarms are compulsory in all Victorian homes. Residential tenants are responsible for regularly cleaning and testing smoke alarms in their homes and to report any faults to the landlord or agent.

Acting Chief Officer Gavin Freeman thanked Bunnings for their support in promoting such vital messages to home owners.

“Most fatal fires start in lounge rooms and bedrooms. Unfortunately, some of these tragedies may have been able to be prevented by having working smoke alarms in the right places,” Gavin said.

“If your smoke alarms aren’t working properly, you may miss a vital early warning sign that could save the lives of you and your family.

“We recommend smoke alarms be fitted in all sleeping and living areas. This is your best chance of an early notification and escape, regardless of where a fire starts.”
