Ballarat City Brigade was called to assist Ballarat City Council at 11.10am after a dog was found trapped down a steep drop at the back of a property on Skipton St, Redan.

Ballarat sent a crew to investigate the incident and found the dog had fallen down a 5m cliff into a thick blackberry bush.

The dog was stuck and as a result of the steep drop a technical rescue crew with high angle equipment was called to rescue the trapped animal.

Ballarat City Leading Firefighter Bohden Jose said seven firefighters assisted in the rescue.

"They did their job confidently and competently," Mr Jose said.

It took the technical rescue team approximately 20 minutes to retrieve the job once the high angle rescue equipment was on scene.

The dog was handed into the care of the council where it is believed to be stable.
